International Women’s Day
March 8th 2024 marks International Women’s Day.
This is a global day celebrating the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women. The day also marks a call to action for accelerating gender parity.
Significant activity is witnessed worldwide as groups come together to celebrate women’s achievements or rally for women’s equality.
International Women’s Day (IWD) originated in the early 20th century. It was closely connected to the suffrage and labour movements and was later adopted by the feminists. In 1997, the day was officially recognised by the United Nations.
Collective action and shared ownership for driving gender parity is what makes International Women’s Day impactful. Gloria Steinem, world-renowned feminist, journalist and activist once explained: “The story of women’s struggle for equality belongs to no single feminist nor to any one organisation but to the collective efforts of all who care about human rights.”.
The campaign theme for 2024 is #InspireInclusion. When we inspire others to understand and value women’s inclusion, we forge a better world.
We asked our colleagues what it meant to them to #InspireInclusion
Maria Miller, Operations Director: “Providing all employees with the opportunity to pursue and achieve their goals and feeling heard. This in turn creates an inclusive environment. An inclusive workplace provides a sense of belonging. Belonging at work is a feeling of a shared work community and this is the key for growth and sustainability.”
Kelly Lee, Operations Manager: “Inspiring inclusion means to me that as a business we are doing everything we can for people to thrive within their roles and empower them to be the best version of themselves no matter what their background is. Ensuring all staff have access to development opportunities and that they can see the different progression opportunities within the organisation.”
Tanya Marie English, Quality Manager: “Inspiring inclusion to me, means that we must embrace and support our colleagues, clients, customers, learners, friends and families understanding of different race, faith, ability and how they identify in an ever changing world. Everyday is a learning day, so I need to understand that everyone is different, I need to listen and offer support to those who face disadvantages, provide information, advice and guidance and signpost individuals to other support networks when I may not be able to give them what they need.”
Kayleigh Johnson, Trainer: “Inspiring inclusion to me personally means to understand individual contributions and strengths no matter what their gender, nationality or background is. Recognising equality and creating a sense of belonging to all. I aim to always empower others in their learning journey and to support any barriers that individuals may face. Developing good partnerships and always actively listening to the needs of others.
To support #IWD2024 at GEM we’ll be having a dress down day, supporting the three colours that signify justice, dignity, loyalty, hope and purity: Purple, Green and White. Any money raised from this will be donated to our 2024 nominated charity “The Hub of Wishes“.
